UCI BMX Supercross World Cup: Papendal, Netherlands

Press release: Preview Round two UCI BMX Supercross

Second stop UCI BMX Supercross on Olympic replica track
Papendal, The Netherlands 21 May 2011 - On 27 and 28 May the next edition of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup presented by Swatch will stop in Papendal, The Netherlands. This Supercross World Cup is the second leg of the 2011 World Cup series and the fifth event to count into the 2010-2011 UCI BMX rankings allowing the riders to accumulate points toward their country's participation at the 2012 Olympic Games.

See video
preview on freecaster.tv.

The brand new permanent Supercross track (picture) is the most advanced and challenging track in the world at the moment and is home to the Dutch team, although other teams are welcome to use the facilities as well.

The design of the Papendal track is almost similar to the design concept for the 2012 Olympic Games track that currently is being constructed. Track Designer Tom Ritzenthaler will take the experience of the Dutch track forward into shaping the final track for the London Olympics.

Elite Men
Corben Sharrah (USA) will lead the USA men's contingent as the number-one ranked rider in the UCI's Supercross World Cup standings. The 19-year-old took the win at round one of the Supercross World Cup in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. The world of BMX is also pleased to see #365 Mike Day (USA) return to BMX Supercross racing after a 1 ½ year absence due to a back operation. Last time BMX fans saw Mike Day in splendid form was at the 2009 UCI BMX Supercross in Chula Vista. According to experts this Dutch track will certainly suit Day’s technical style.

Marc Willers (NZL) will be eager to improve his performance of Pietermaritzburg. In South Africa Willers looked set to make the final but the friendly Kiwi crashed in the semi-finals. Joris Daudet (FRA) also looked very strong on the African ochre-red clay, winning the time trials and finishing second in the main final. Khalen Young (AUS), who was very pleased with his third place podium result in Africa. Young looked strong and determined in South Africa, will he be fighting for the podium in the Netherlands again?

Current World and Olympic Champion Maris Strombergs (LAT) is unfortunately still on the injury list. Strombergs is planning to return to BMX Racing in July for the UCI BMX World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Experts also expect big things from the Dutch Army. The orange team of coach Bas de Bever will have a slight home track advantage. The experienced riders like Raymon van der Biezen #121 and Jelle van Gorkom #37, Sander Bisseling #40 are reported to be very fast on this challenging track.

Elite Women
Manon Valentino (FRA) certainly surprised a few with her convincing win at round one of the BMX Supercross in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Valentino will be keen to proof that her Pietermaritzburg win was well deserved by mixing it up in Papendal as well. Others to watch for are the 2009 BMX World Champion Sarah Walker (NZL), 2010 MTB 4X World Champion Caroline Buchanan (AUS) and 2009 junior BMX World Champion Mariana Pajon (COL).

Last but not least, current World Champion, Shanaze Reade (GBR) is making her return to BMX racing and will surely aim for a win, if not just to build her confidence on this Olympic replica track.

The traveling coffee cup is on it's way to Parker, AZ for the Sprint Boat Championships.  The weather is expected to be clear with a warm 90 degrees F during the day and 60's F during the evenings.  The cup used to frequently work this area along with Havasu during the 1990's and early 2000's but has not been back in some time.  It will be a great time revisiting old friends in the area at the same time working a fantastic event.

The cup will keep you posted....

UCI BMX Supercross Season Opener in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa

Press release: Round One UCI BMX Supercross world cup 2011

UCI BMX Supercross Season opener in Pietermaritzburg RSA
31 March 2011 - The UCI BMX Supercross World Cup presented by SWATCH is the premiere BMX racing series in the world and serves as main qualification event for the 2012 Olympic Games. First round kicks off in Pietermaritzburg South Africa on 8 and 9 April. 104 Elite men and 38 Elite women are registered from 20 countries.

Permanent BMX track in Pietermaritzburg
On Wednesday 30 March the first truckloads of ochre-red soil for the world class track arrived at Alexandra Park where the city’s mayor Mike Tarr was on hand to move the first sods into place. The permanent BMX track will sit alongside the Pietermaritzburg cricket oval and the cycling velodrome, and will provide an eagerly awaited year-round base for the BMX fans in the region.

“It’s our plan to take the whole area around Alexandra Park and turn it into a sporting precedent and this BMX track forms a part of that greater plan,” said mayor Tarr.

Once the BMX Supercross event is completed the track builders will reshape the course into a less challenging layout, better suited to local emerging and intermediate talent.

Preview Round One 2011
When all the action gets underway at Alexandra Park in Pietermaritzburg on 8 and 9 April all BMX fans will eagerly await who takes first blood of the season. With 485 days to go to the start of the London Olympics this is the time to make your mark and eventually qualify for the pinnacle event in BMX racing, the Olympic Games. See live video on freecaster

The runner up of last year’s World Championships, South African favorite Safizo Nhlapo will not compete due to a knee injury.

“It’s obviously very disappointing and it’s sad to have to go through something as serious as this just a year before the Olympics,” said Nhlapo. “I guess this comes with the sport though and it’s just part of being a professional.”

With the widely feared Latvian Maris Strombergs also being out of the Pietermaritzburg event many of these two Olympic finalists' nearest rivals will be eager to take advantage of this golden opportunity and get their seasons off on a positive note.

Marc Willers (NZL) will definitely be someone to keep en eye on. The flying Kiwi has been on a winning streak ever since his second place finish at the 2010 BMX Supercross finals in Frejus, France.

Sam Willoughby (AUS) is always a strong contender. The Australian was obviously very disappointed not winning the World Cup series last year and is now on a new mission.

Also keep an eye out for the large Dutch and French teams. Big teams wich are getting stronger by the day, with several experienced riders on the team, backed up with several young guns. Look out for the return of #666 Dutchmen Ivo van der Putten.

The battle for supremacy amongst Elite Women is going to be wide open this year. Last year’s overall World Cup winner Laetitia Le Corguille (France) and 2010 World BMX Champion Shanaze Reade (GBR) are not competing in South Africa, leaving the floor for Sarah Walker (NZL), Alice Post (USA), Mariana Pajon (COL), Eva Ailloud (FRA), Caroline Buchanan (AUS), Arielle Martin (USA) or last year’s Junior World Champion Merle van Benthem (NED) to name a few.
New Permanent BMX Supercross track opened in the Netherlands.
On 25th March an impressive crowd assembled in Papendal the Netherlands for the opening of a brand new BMX Supercross track. UCI president Pat McQuaid was present to open the challenging course designed and build by Tom Ritzenthaler.

(Picture FAT BMX)

Bas de Bever Dutch chief BMX coach was very pleased with this track. Other countries are invited to train in Holland too. Evil Ivo van der Putten (#666) considers it the most challenging track in the world.

The Saga Continues with the Traveling Coffee Cup 2.07.11 - 2.13.11

I am nearly 'down to my last drop' this week, but it was worth every moment.  The Winter Dew Tour Championships combined with climbing to elevations upward of 9,000ft to marvel at the spectacular views of Utah's Wasatch Mountains, made my time spent at Snowbasin Ski Resort in Huntsville a 'brew to remember'.  Perfect weather conditions with bright sun and not a cloud in the sky made 'blueberries' every day, which really was the 'cherry topping' on a great week.  For those of you who have never been to the Sun Valley's Snowbasin resort, you are truly missing out on one of Utah's 'best kept secrets'.  This picturesque gem established in the 1940's came from humble beginnings with just two rope tows that lifted local powder-hungry skiers up Becker Hill.  What started as a local skier's delight, soon evolved into a seasonal lure for skiers and snowboarders from all around the world.  This 'best kept secret' was up in 2002 when Snowbasin Resort hit the pro circuit after hosting the men's and women's Downhill, Super G, Combined, and Paralymipc winter events.

Snowbasin is a part of the Sinclair Corporation family of companies, which also includes the Grand America, Little America Hotels, Westgate Plaza, and Sun Valley Resort.  So cool!  I've been told that the owner actually hand-selected all of the materials utilized within the restaurants around the mountain, some of which traveled across the globe to get here. Enjoy the photos below and be sure to put Snowbasin on your bucket list of places to visit!

Welcome to the Needles Lodge. I'm just here relaxing by the fire.
You won't find a more peaceful place.

My view from the lodge. Truly a slice of Heaven.

Another look down the mountain from the Needles Lodge.

Here's where you get off from the Gondola to enter the Needles Lodge.

Felt like getting some fresh air and sunshine.

Just checking over the map to see where I'm going to journey to next.

I'm hoping we don't need to utilize this today.

This is one of the several magnificent chandeliers on the resort.

A closer look at the detail of the chandelier.

This perfect setting to kick back and enjoy some delicious cuisine.....AH- MAZING!!!

The next series of pictures are definitely worth seeing in person.  Everyone
knows that Snowbasin has absolutely the nicest restrooms you'll ever
visit at any ski resort.  They're wonderfully decorated, very private and always clean.
It has been said that this might be one of the swankiest bathrooms you'll ever use.

A look into the main vanity area of the woman's bathroom in the Needles Lodge.

Another view of the vanity area.

The hallway of private bathrooms.  Notice that the doors go all the way to the  floor.

Part of the decor as you enter the restroom in the Needles Lodge.

A fancy light fixture in the restroom.

Time to head back down to Main Medical.  I'm loving the view from the Gondola.

To follow, pictures of us running the venues and some of the action that happened up on the hill over the course of the week.  For more current, up-to-date information, please follow us on twitter @WMICorp and "Like" us on Facebook - WMICorp.
